Answers to common questions about care
Do I need to seal my countertop?
Quartz surfacing: No. The seal is engineered into the stone at production.
Solid surfacing: No. Solid surfaces are non-porous and therefore resistant to stains.
How do I know if I need to seal my granite?
If a homeowner cleans up their countertops after each meal, they will rarely, if ever, have any staining or clean-ability issues with granite. Most granite slabs receive a resin treatment on their surfaces at the original factory where the granite blocks are cut into slabs and polished. This treatment will fill in the small microfissures, indentations, and other minor characteristics that are typically found in most natural stones. This resin treatment, some of the most cutting edge chemical technology on the market, simply adds strength to the already resistant nature of stone.
If, however, you feel that water and other liquids are being absorbed into your stone and may leave a residue, SolidTops recommends the use of Stonecare 611 sealant, which can be purchased at many hardware stores or on the internet. Be sure to spot test your sealant on an inconspicuous area of your countertops and watch for any negative chemical reactions. Follow the manufacturers recommended application directions and you will have a worry-free experience sealing your granite.
What should I avoid with my countertops?
Granite: Wine, mustard, oils, acidic chemicals.
Silestone: Really nothing can hurt Silestone!!
Solid Surfaces: Harsh chemical products, acetone, sharp implements
Can I set hot things on my stone countertops?
We recommend that you DO NOT place hot things such as hot pots directly on any of the countertops we offer. High temperatures can cause thermal shock and scorching. Simply using trivets and hot pads will prevent a world of problems and repairs.
Is it safe to sit or stand on my countertops?
Countertops are designed to support cooking activities and appliances. They are not designed to support people. Never sit or stand on any countertop. Damage resulting from sitting or standing on a countertop is not covered by any warranty.
